Over the years, Coppé (Co-pa’y) has worked with some of the most forward-thinking artists around, from ex-Orb Chris ‘Thrash’ Weston to British duo Plaid, DJ Vadim, The Program, Ryan Breen and many many more. Her music encompasses anything and everything from subtle ambient to hardcore techno to delicate pop to jazz tones to psychedelic lounge ambiences, each genre bent at will to accommodate her digital poetry. Yet, her work is always extremely consistent. Despite all the influences and various inputs, her music is unmistakably Coppé. Coppe’ spent most of her childhood between the Japan and Honolulu, learning classical piano and ballet from the age of three. A few years later, she moved to Arizona, set up a studio and started exploring textures and abstraction through electronic music. When her father fell ill, and consequently died, back home, she relocated to Honolulu for a couple of years before eventually returning to Japan last year to be near her mother.
mango.jpgFar from slowing her down, finding herself back in the hustle and bustle of manic Tokyo has sent her creative juices into overdrive, and the result is 9+10, which collects some previously unreleased material (she has loads), a handful of remixes and loads of new songs, making it her most diverse release to date. Assembled to celebrate ten years of Mango & Sweet Rice, her own label, this bumper release provides a unique chance to take a vagabond stroll through her music and her career, from beautiful pop moments (Lavender Oil, Green Tea Chocolate, Devil’s Song) to hi-tech groove (Tokyo Sick), disturbed electronic experimentation (Bird’s Midair Heat Stroke, Pork Injection), funky lounge (RDJ, an ode to Richard D James, her hero, Cutting Toenails In The Park), heavy trippy beat (Meltin’ Down). Coppé even ups the stakes with the wonderful My Tears Become Lavender Oil, a sombre ballad set against a backdrop of crystalline piano and strings. A unique artist whose music and personality have captivated so many fellow musicians around the globe, it is truly puzzling that her work hasn’t caught the imagination of the world by now. Here’s your chance to jump feet first and immerse yourself in the work of one of today’s most compelling artist.
